BRQ | Vantaa Festival

Music from the Classical and Romantic Era on Period instruments

In the second concert of the opening day of BRQ Vantaa Festival, the BRQ ensemble offers a B&B assortment: chamber music by Boccherini and Brahms for string ensemble.

The Italian-Spanish composer Luigi Boccherini is said to have taken the development of chamber music begun by Joseph Haydn a step further - or several steps, as far as the role of the cello is concerned. Boccherini himself was a cellist, which may explain the important role of the cello in Boccherini's chamber music. In the decades after Boccherini, next to nothing was written for string ensemble without piano until Johannes Brahms published his string sextet and started a string sextet boom among composers. Brahms arranged the second movement of his sextet for piano and dedicated the arrangement to Clara Schuman. Although at the time of Boccherin and Bach the instruments had gut strings, these works are nowadays mostly played on modern instruments. On the period instruments of the BRQ ensemble, the works are played in the same tones as they sounded to the composers' ears when they wrote them.

Luigi Boccherini (1743-1805): String Quintet in D minor No.1 Op. 25
Larghetto – Allegro - Minuet / Trio - Rondo

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897): String sextet B-Flat Major No. 1 Op. 18
