BRQ | Vantaa Festival

Italian 17th century music

BRQ Vantaa festivals opening concert of 2023 will feature early Italian baroque performed by BRQ musicians. The programme begins with a chamber sonata by the prolific composer and violinist Giovanni Battista Fontana, whose work is full of expressive harmonies and fascinating counterpoints. Other violinist-composers included Ambrogio Pandolfi Mealli, Dario Castello and Tarquinio Merula (who was also an organist), all of whom tested the limits of instruments and compositions, both sonically and in terms of technical virtuosity. Virtuosity was also on display in the Ricercatas for cornett by the Venetian composer and cornett player Giovanni Bassano, this time we will hear No. 4 as a recorder solo. The music of the Italian-Jewish composer and violinist Salamone Rossi, who worked as a court musician for the Duke of Mantua, will also be heard towards the end of the festival, when the Basel-based vocal ensemble Profeti della quinta will perform Rossi's collection "Songs of Solomon". The opening concert will feature two sonatas, originally composed for two violins and continuo, in a recorder-violin-continuo version. Ross's music combines Italian and Jewish musical traditions with a variety of dance rhythms and ornamentations. Like his compatriots, the organist-composer Giovanni Gabrieli cultivated dramatic changes of mood in his works.
