The programme takes the listener to 16th and early 17th century Italy and to the world of secular Madrigal. The madrigal was a genre in which composers experimented with new musical ways of expressing text. The text-based expression begun in the madrigals of Cipriano de Rore (c. 1515-1565), later known as seconda prattica, paved the way for the first operas. De Rore was the mentor of many generations to come, including Luzzasco Luzzaschi (c. 1545-1607), who served at the court of Ferrara. Luzzasci, in turn, mentored Don Carlo Gesualdo (1560-1613), a nobleman and mostly self-taught composer whose chromatic and avant-garde madrigals take the expression of poetry to extremes. An almost unknown composer of the same school is Scipione Lacorcia (1585?-1620?), who ventured even further than Gesualdo, and whose music could be thought to have been composed in the 20th century. The programme concludes with Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643), in whose hands the madrigal genre developed into a musical drama.
Luzzascho Luzzaschi (1545–1607):
Io veggio pur pietate
Morir non puo'l mio core

Ancor che col partire
Datemi pace

Carlo Gesualdo (1566-1613):
Occhi, del mio cor vita

Ahi, tu piangi
Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643): Lamento della ninfa
