England was a “melting pot” of cultures during the Baroque period, which is reflected in English Baroque music. The music often included elements of English folk melodies and dance forms, as well as influences from Italian and French Baroque styles. The church at times had a tight grip on the musical life, as a result of which the influence of church music can be heard in court music, but there were also dance music influences hidden in church music. The superhero of English music was Henry Purcell, best known for his opera and ballet music. This concert features Purcell's instrumental music from his four-part sonata collections. William Lawes' style of composition was and still is considered quirky, not following the rules of the time but making unconventional melodic and harmonic experiments.
Henry Purcell (1659-1695): Sonata No. 1 in B minor for two violins, bass viol and harpsichord Z802
William Lawes (1602-1645): Fantasia No. 7 in D minor for two violins, bass viol and organ
Robert Johnson (1583-1633): Pavan, Alma and Carman's Whistle for lute
Henry Purcell: Sonata No. 6 in G minor for two violins, bass viol and harpsichord Z804
William Lawes: Royal Consort Sett No. 2 in D minor, arrangement for two violins, bass viol and lute
Henry Purcell: Sonata No. 3 in A minor for two violins, bass viol and harpsichord Z807
