Johann Sebastian Bach's music is full of references and loans: church music, of course, refers to biblical texts and events, but Bach also quotes himself and his contemporaries. That is why also Bach's music can be authentically borrowed. In this programme, cello suites are borrowed to viola and lute, a partita to bass viol and an organ sonata is performed by a small chamber ensemble.
Bach's solo cello suites from the Köthen period are well established in the basic repertoire of viola players, and hearing them played on a lute is not uncommon while versions of the organ sonatas will also be heard at this festival in four different variations for different ensembles.
