Ilkka Eronen
Ilkka Eronen is a traverso player and flutist originating from Lieksa, now residing in Helsinki. He began playing the flute at the age of 10 at the Pielinen Karelia Music Institute under the guidance of Satu Huuki. He graduated with a Master of Music degree from the Department of Early Music at the Sibelius Academy, University of the Arts Helsinki, in 2023. Additionally, he has studied the traverso at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and flute at the Tampere Conservatory. His traverso teachers during his studies have included Jari S. Puhakka, Kate Clark, and Wilbert Hazelzet. Moreover, he has participated in masterclasses by Rachel Brown, Anna Besson, Marten Root, Johanna Bartz, and Dorothee Oberlinger, among others.
Ilkka Eronen regularly performs with various early music ensembles, such as the Finnish Baroque Orchestra, Helsinki Baroque Orchestra, Ensemble Nylandia, and Pirkanmaa Baroque, playing historical flutes from the Renaissance to the early Romantic period. In addition, he has worked as a flutist and piccolo player with the Kaartin Combo and Helsinki City Theatre. In the spring of 2024, Eronen worked as the deputy principal flutist with the Joensuu City Orchestra.
Ilkka Eronen is also a member of the four-person ensemble Æstus. In June 2023, Æstus won the Nordic Early Music competition organized by Nordem in Stockholm. The ensemble currently focuses on 18th-century music, but they also perform new contemporary music. Æstus has premiered two new works by composers Lucy Callen and Tytti Arola. Additionally, Eronen plays in the Intra vires Renaissance ensemble.
