Eero Saunamäki
Eero Saunamäki is Finland's most renowned recorder player. His innovative solo concerts, internationally recognized album on the BIS label, performances as a soloist with numerous symphony orchestras, as well as appearances on television, radio, and YouTube, make him one of the busiest music professionals of his generation.
Saunamäki's musical background is exceptionally diverse: in addition to the recorder, he plays the saxophone, sings pop music, and serves as a band leader. Beyond his work as a musician, he works as the executive producer for the BRQ Vantaa Festival, which focuses on early music, and as a teacher at the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki. Saunamäki has worked for nearly twenty years in the Presidential Guard's Band.
Saunamäki aims to discover new music and audiences for his beloved recorder and has premiered over 40 works for the instrument, including four concertos. He also performs early music with a harpsichordist and lutenist and arranges all sorts of music for the recorder, sometimes using electronics or loopers. Saunamäki enjoys playing the baritone saxophone in the classical Aava Saxophone Quartet and the gritty Tusan Brass street band. He also sings pop music in many bands. Engaging with the audience is natural for the energetic Saunamäki, who seeks to bring fresh winds to old concert traditions.
Eero Saunamäki has collaborated extensively with various cultural figures, including dancers, actors, and sound artists. He is a founding member of the Finnish Recorder Society and served as its chairman for 15 years. Saunamäki studied at the Sibelius Academy, the University of Helsinki, and the Helsinki Pop & Jazz Conservatory, and has participated in many master classes.
His musical career has been supported by numerous foundations and funds, and between 2024-2026, Saunamäki will be undertaking artistic work with the support of artist grants from the Arts Promotion Centre Finland and the Finnish Cultural Foundation.
